Washington Post: Google-backed drones will drop library books so kids in Virginia can do their summer reading

Wing, the tech giant’s sister company, will deliver them to students in the state’s Montgomery County School District

Virginia libraries are experimenting with drone delivery of books and other media to households.

Due to the statewide shutdown, local librarians took the initiative and asked to have a local pilot project for drone delivery of groceries be expanded to include books and media. Today the pilot program supports 600 individuals and includes delivery only, not return.

It is exciting to see so much innovation and experimentation occurring in the library field during this recession and pandemic.

We anticipate a first step toward increased access through improved online services in our new Digital Library strategy as it unrolls this summer.
